Rock Chip
A single impact point — bullseye, half-moon, or pit. Glass around the impact is still structurally intact.
Resin injection fills the void in 45 minutes. Strength restored to 95%. Most insurers cover at $0 deductible.
Note: Act within 72 hours — dirt and moisture contaminate the break.
Linear Crack
A line extending from an impact or edge stress. May travel slowly or rapidly depending on temperature swings.
Repairable if under 6 inches and not in driver sight-line. Longer cracks weaken the laminate bond.
Note: Temperature change of 40°F can extend a crack 2 inches overnight.
Star Break
Multiple cracks radiating from a central impact. The pattern looks like a starburst or spider web.
Structural integrity is compromised when legs exceed 3 inches. Replacement is safer and often covered.
Note: Do not use defrost or high-pressure car wash — vibration accelerates propagation.
Combination Break
A chip at center with multiple radiating cracks and possible secondary impacts. Complex structural damage.
No repair method restores optical clarity or structural integrity. Full replacement is the only safe path.
Note: This is a safety failure. Do not drive until replaced — the windshield is 30% of roof crush resistance.
